Achates

Achates. [Greek .] (Greek & Roman Mythology.) A companion and friend of Æneas. His fidelity was so exemplary that "fidus Achates." faithful Achates, became a proverb.

Old enough, perhaps, but scarce wise enough, if he has chosen this fellow for his "fidus Achates."
-- Sir W. Scott.

Achates, called by Virgil "fidus Achates." The name has become a synonym for a bosom friend, a crony, but is generally used laughingly.

He, like Achates, faithful to the tomb.
--Byron: Don Juan, l. 159.
