Adalbert

Adalbert. Calligrapher.. Saec. XII.

Monk of an Italian foundation, probably Montamiata.

Wrote, about 1169, a Bible with illuminated initials, &c.

Bandini quotes a passage from an account of a great Bible in 5 volumes, bequeathed by Cardinal Nicolas, of Prato, to the Dominican Monastery at Viterbo in 1321, containing miniatures and illuminated initials. One item runs thus: "Ego presbiter Gerardus dedi per manum dñi Benedicti Camerarii Adalberto scriptori de licteris (litteris) maioribus de auro et de colore, sol. vii. et dimidium." Another entry has, "Dedimus sciptori Alberto Vulterrensi, sol. x. ed d. ii." There is a tradition referred to by the learned librarian (p. 707, &c.) that the famous Bible of Montamiata was written "manibus beatissimi Pontificis Gregorii," the Great, elected 590. This Bible must not be confounded with the above.--Bandini: Bibl. Leopoldina-Laurentiana, pp. 705, &c.

NOTE--There is an elaborate dissertation on the celebrated Codex Amiatinus or Bible of Montamiata at the end of vol. i. of Bandini's Catalogue of the Leopoldina-Laurentiana MSS.

Adalbert. Illuminator.

Monk of Tegernsee.

The chronicle of the abbey mentions a psalm-book illuminated by him (Cod. E. 43, fol. 110):--Pez.: vi. i. 189.--Oberbayerisches Archiv für vaterländische Geschichte, &c., i. 28.

"Schon unter Gosbert wurde sie betrieben, da, wie später angegeben wird, der Mönch Adelbert zwei Evangelienbücher zierte."--Jos. v. Hefner in Oberbayerisches Archiv, i. 26.
