Adalpert

Adalpert. Miniaturist.. Saec. X.

Monk of St. Emmeram at Regensburg (Ratisbon) about 975.

He restored the miniatures of the famous "Golden Gospels" at the command of Abbot Ramvold, in which labour he was assisted by Aripo, a monk of the same foundation.--Fiorillo: Gesch. der Zeichnenden Künste in Deutschland, i. 65.

"One may notice in these miniatures traces of a restoration or freshening up, which took place probably in the time of Abbot Ramvold, or Romuald, whose portrait appears in folio I. (That is, about the year 975.) At end we read: Domini Abbatis Ramvoldi iussione hunc lib. Aripo et Adalpertus renovaverunt.

NOTE.--The "Golden Gospels" of St. Emmeram were originally adorned in 870 with precious miniatures by the two brothers Berengarius and Liuthardus, both of them monks, by order of Charles the Bald, then King of the Franks. The magnificent volume was written for Charles and presented by him to the Abbey of St. Denis. In 888 it was presented by the Abbot of St. Denis to the Emperor Arnulf, and by him handed over to the Abbey of St. Emmeram, where it remained until transferred to the "Cimelien Saal" at Munich in which it still remains.* Its original covers were of gold set with precious stones and pearls. (See BERENGARIUS.)

Cahier (Mélanges d'Archéologie, ii. pl. 3) gives a faithful reproduction of the cover. For a reduced copy of the miniature, containing the seated figure of the Emperor, see also i. p. 47. A very splendid reproduction in gold and colours is given in Labarte.
